Who are we?
The Kameleon Camera was created by two pediatricians who are also practicing fathers. Balázs Király and Péter Altorjai have examined thousands of young patients over more than a quarter century of clinical practice. They know exactly how reassuring it is for parents to receive quick, reliable answers when concerns arise.
“For years, I have relied on the advantages of mobile communication in my work. In urgent cases, I try to guide worried parents by phone. They often call saying their child is lethargic or has a red throat. In these situations, we need to see the affected area. After reviewing many mobile phone images, Péter and I began thinking about what kind of device would allow parents to capture images of sufficient quality and detail.
Our device combines three key elements: a high-quality camera, precise adjustable LED illumination, and proper tongue depression. It was also important for us that the recording process be as non-threatening and comfortable as possible for young patients, so we designed the device with a friendly appearance.
I often arrive at my clinic with my dog, Hugó, and I see how positively his presence affects children. We hope the Kameleon will achieve similar success with our young patients.”

“I love gadgets — at home I practically have a whole room full of devices. I believe it is wonderful that advances in science and technology are becoming part of our everyday lives, making them simpler and more convenient.
When designing the Kameleon Camera, we primarily had parents of young children in mind. Sore throat is something that tests even experienced parents: although most cases resolve without intervention, some do require medical treatment. With a proper recording, we can quickly provide feedback on whether further examination is necessary.
If it is a simple cold, parents don’t need to take time off work or travel with a sick child and wait in a crowded clinic — children can recover peacefully at home.”

How the Kameleon camera was created
We have worked as pediatricians for nearly thirty years. During this time, we have continuously followed scientific and technological advances, always seeking newer and more effective methods and tools to support our work. The Kameleon Camera was born from this commitment.
In our experience, parents often want professional guidance from the very first moment of their child’s illness. In today’s fast-paced world, there is also a growing need to manage simpler problems without visiting the clinic.
However, without a physical examination, accurate medical judgment depends on the quality of the description, photo, or video provided. With an adequate recording and appropriate teleconsultation, the physician can decide whether the condition can be safely managed at home or whether an in-person examination is necessary.
This is especially true for common colds and throat infections. While recording a child’s throat with a smartphone may seem simple, in most cases the result is unfortunately not suitable for reliable medical assessment.
After testing several similar — and often much more expensive — devices, we decided to create a pediatric throat examination camera that truly meets parents’ and clinicians’ needs. Our goal was to develop an easy-to-use device capable of producing the level of detail required for accurate clinical decision-making by simultaneously providing a spatula and a precisely controlled light source — all in a child-friendly design.
We concealed both the camera and the spatula inside a friendly chameleon. This calm, patient little animal’s long “tongue” houses the spatula and the camera, so during the examination children encounter not a strange medical instrument but a lovable companion. Parents can then quickly and easily send the recorded image or video to their clinician, who can safely decide whether the child needs further in-clinic evaluation with teleconsulation.
During early prototype use, many colleagues reported that the Kameleon Camera significantly supported their daily work. These positive experiences encouraged us to bring the Kameleon Camera to market as a reliable, safe, and affordable solution.
The playful Kameleon design makes it much easier to engage children in throat examinations — especially when they can even choose their favorite color.
For us, physicians, the benefits are equally substantial. During a live throat examination in a small child, the key view may only be visible for a few seconds. By reviewing the video, however, much more time is available for accurate assessment. The recording can be analyzed almost frame by frame, allowing clinicians to immediately show and clearly explain to parents what the observed findings may mean and whether medication is necessary.
The video can also be stored in the child’s medical documentation, supporting and validating the physician’s clinical decision. It can be shared with parents as well, who greatly appreciate receiving more than just a “slightly red throat” opinion — they gain a clear visual understanding of their child’s condition.
The recording may also be used to request specialist consultation in uncertain or disputed cases.
